GET TO KNOW YOUR CHAMPION
Bio: An eclectic, eccentric jack of all trades and master of architecture. We love and live all things design with a passion for social upliftment through passive, sustainable design solutions and while exploring these themes in my master’s dissertation, my love for research and humanism were nurtured. I’m a bit of a recluse and I love astrology and crystals.
Causes and initiatives I support: Ideologies are a broad topic but in order of importance, the ideologies that resonate with me during this lifetime are: equality of opportunity, feminism, spiritualism, ecological ideologies around sustainable practice. Ideologies are lenses through which you view the world, some of my views on the world are still changing. During the past 10 years I have been involved with and support Habitat for Humanity (and their builds), the Aryan Benevolent Home in Durban, WESSA (Wildlife and Environmental Society of SA) as well as housing NGO’s and initiatives such as NASHO (National Association of Social Housing Organizations), Ndifuna Ukwazi and Reclaim the City.
What do you hope to achieve as a #BlueRibbon Champion?: As a #BlueRibbon Champion I hope to inspire, empower and encourage women to support and uplift each other through this network of incredible women. By use of social media and educational material, I would also like to raise awareness around the importance of prioritising your own mental and physical health through Marie Stopes.
What does feminism or woman empowerment mean to me: "Feminism is the radical notion that women are people." – Marie Shear, 1986. To me, intersectional feminism (interplay between gender and other forms of discrimination) and woman empowerment are about dismantling patriarchal views on femme bodies while empowering each other and advocating for women’s rights on the grounds of equality of the sexes.
Favourite song: To the Moon and Back – Savage Garden, 1997.
Dream destination: Kathmandu + Himalayas in Nepal.
Knowing what I now know, I would tell my 14-year-old self: “You will stumble, trip and fall many times in this lifetime, each time will feel worse than the last, but you have the strength to pick yourself up, if you remember to prioritise yourself and protect your peace”.
The one goal I wish to achieve: would like to patent my design solution for low income housing. And design an iconic chair.
