Sexual and reproductive health as a human right
In the past twenty years, efforts to address discriminatory practices against women have been made. However, women still encounter major challenges when it comes to their sexual and reproductive health and rights. In many African countries, women’s independence to exercise sexual and reproductive health options is often undermined by many cultural, religious and social attitudes towards the sexuality of women.
While there are some differences in the approach to sexual and reproductive health and rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Protocol to the African Charter on the Rights of Women in Africa (African Women’s Protocol) highlight the need for non-discrimination to enable all women to exercise and benefit from sexual and reproductive health services in the communities in which they live.
